Fresh analysis reveals that patients who discontinue popular slimming jabs like Mounjaro or Wegovy may regain shed pounds much more quickly than those who halt conventional diet and exercise regimens.
Published data in a prominent health publication shows that while overweight people can lose about a fifth of their body weight while using the jabs, the mass comes back at an estimated rate of nearly a kilo each month upon discontinuation.
"Users buying such treatments should be informed of the potential of quick weight regain when the treatment is stopped," cautioned expert Dr. Susan Jebb.
This pace of regain implies a reversion to starting mass within about a year and a half.
Comparing Approaches
The analysis, which examined 37 of trials involving over 9,000 of patients, contrasted the effects of these new drugs with conventional dieting.
Scientists note that people who lose weight through dieting generally see a slower creep back—around 0.1 kg a month—once they finish.
Understanding the Fast Rebound
Doctors propose the way of the jabs accounts for the accelerated rebound.
The injections imitate a body's own chemical called glucagon-like peptide-1, which moderates hunger.
"Sustained high doses of GLP-1 concentrations far above than the body's typical production could lead to the body to generate a reduced amount of its own natural hormone, and may also diminish sensitivity to its actions," said Dr. Adam Collins, a dietetics researcher.
"Discontinuation of this GLP-1 'fix' results in hunger is no longer kept in check, making binge eating a significant risk."
An Ongoing Condition?
Health authorities recommend the injections for people with obesity-related health risks, alongside recommended diet and exercise modifications.
A number of clinicians argue that, given the likelihood of weight regain, the therapy might need to be ongoing.
This perspective is supported by drug manufacturers, who note that the findings "emphasize the long-term character of excess weight," similar to managing diseases like high blood pressure.
Patient Testimonies
People who have come off the jabs describe a powerful return of appetite.
"It felt as if something flipping and you become extremely hungry," said an individual.
The struggle is exacerbated if patients have not adopted permanent dietary or behavioural changes during treatment.
Widespread Adoption
Recent estimates indicate that a significant number of people in the UK have used weight-loss jabs in the last 12 months, with interest being substantial.
- Use is more common among females compared to men.
- The middle-aged demographic shows the highest level of interest.
- A large proportion access the drugs through private prescriptions rather than the NHS.
Ultimately, researchers stress that while GLP-1 drugs are potent tools for shedding pounds, they are not a permanent solution and maintained weight loss hinges on integrated behavioural changes.
